Tomorrow, March 4th 2009, The Coalition Agaist the Funding Cuts is holding a Forum at SFU that will address the implications of the Province’s new budget on postsecondary education (in the short and long term), and what this means for SFU.
I will be speaking on student activism and the steps we need to take to stop this budget from destroying postsecondary education. This will be recorded. And I will try to post it up here.
Meanwhile, UVic is hosting its own Rally Against the Cuts, on March 5th.
From their GSS website:
“he theme of the rally is ‘A Funeral for Public Education’, recognizing the very real fact that the only possible result of continuing cutbacks will be an end to the public education system as we know it. The rally will be held March 5, in two parts. The first part will be a funeral / rally at the University of Victoria, held at 12 PM at the fountain in front of the Library. At this rally, speakers from each of the affected groups (workers, students, faculty, and administration) will be joined by provincial politicians to speak to the effects of these cutbacks, and the importance of maintaining funding for education. Petitions and personal statements will also be distributed at this point, with signed copies collected and placed inside a wooden coffin. This coffin will be at the centre of the second part of the day’s proceedings. A funeral procession at 3 PM will bring the coffin, with the enclosed statements of support for public education, from Centennial Square down Government St. to the front steps of the BC Legislature. The coffin will be escorted by 8 pallbearers, representing all segments of the post-secondary education system, and followed by all those wishing to join in making a strong statement to the provincial government that these cuts will not go unnoticed.”
